Sandpoint gave us a relaxed lake-town stop after Glacier, with camping at Round Lake State Park, a walk along the Pend Oreille Bay Trail, a boat tour on Lake Pend Oreille, and time downtown. As we continued west toward Spokane, Kootenai Falls and its swinging bridge gave us one more memorable roadside stop along the way.

Round Lake State Park is a forested camping and recreation area south of Sandpoint. We used it as our base while visiting Lake Pend Oreille and downtown.
Lake Pend Oreille defines Sandpoint, with shoreline access from City Beach, the Pend Oreille Bay Trail, and boat tours from town. We combined a morning walk beside the lake with a narrated cruise across its broad, mountain-ringed water.
Downtown Sandpoint is a compact district of restaurants, shops, public art, and historic buildings near the lake. We walked through the Cedar Street Bridge marketplace and stopped for locally made ice cream.
Kootenai Falls spreads across a rocky section of the Kootenai River near Libby, Montana. A short trail reaches several waterfall viewpoints and continues to a pedestrian suspension bridge high above the river.
