Kootenai Falls

1 / 2
After a solid 10 days in Glacier, we hit the road with the Pacific Northwest in our sights. Our next stop was Sandpoint, Idaho, but along the drive we pulled off at Kootenai Falls, not far from the little town of Libby, Montana.
It was just a short walk from the parking lot to the falls, but what a payoff. Wide, powerful cascades crashed throughout a rocky gorge. Totally different from anything we saw in Glacier, but just as stunning. We also took a quick detour on the same trail to check out the swinging bridge, which sways high above the river. We walked across it, with it swaying enough to keep things interesting without being sketchy.

Along the trail, we noticed a few ripe berries on thimbleberry bushes that we’d seen all over Glacier. In Glacier, not a single berry was ready for eating. I picked a few, and we all gave them a try. These red berries looked like raspberries but were just a little less sweet.

Not a long stop, but a solid reminder that sometimes the best parts of a trip aren’t always the destinations.
