Arrival to Spokane

1 / 2
Spokane welcomed us with a brutal wall of heat, with highs topping 100°F the day we arrived. We met my parents at Manito Park for a picnic lunch and managed to claim a nice shady spot under a big tree. I would have loved to explore more of the gardens, because they looked beautiful, but the sun had other plans.
After lunch, we drove around the park a bit to take in the scenery, and to my surprise, we spotted marmots just hanging out. Until then, I had only ever seen them on high elevation trails in cooler temperatures, so seeing them in the middle of a city heat wave felt pretty strange.

Later, we split up, with my parents heading to their hotel while we made our way to the campground. Unfortunately, our site had no hookups. Some sites had electric, but they were all booked. So for the first time in four months, we ditched the campground and checked into a Hampton Inn for two nights. Air conditioning, a long shower, and no tank levels to monitor felt like absolute luxury.

That evening, we met up with my parents again for dinner at Frank’s Diner, a fully restored 1906 railcar turned retro restaurant. It is one of those quirky local spots with great food and old school charm, and it was the perfect way to end a very hot day.
