Bryce Canyon to Capital Reef Travel Day

3 / 3
After a couple days exploring Bryce Canyon, it was time to move on toward Capitol Reef. We had spent the night boondocking along Forest Road 1173 just outside Bryce, tucked into a shady spot among the pine trees.
We woke to a lively chorus of songbirds flitting through the branches above us. A few cooperated long enough for a photo, including a mountain chickadee, a yellow-rumped warbler, and a chipping sparrow hopping around the forest floor. Most of them, however, seemed determined to stay just out of reach of the camera.

From there we packed up and began the drive east toward Capitol Reef. The route winds through some beautiful desert country, with layers of colorful rock unfolding across the landscape.

Along UT-24 we passed an interesting abandoned grain elevator near Torrey. The weathered red building with its tall concrete silos stood out against the desert backdrop, and curiosity got the better of us. We pulled over for a closer look and I snapped a few photos before continuing on.

Later that afternoon we found our dispersed camping spot just outside Capitol Reef. Unlike our shaded campsite near Bryce, this one was wide open with sweeping red rock views in every direction. A few other campers were scattered across the landscape, but they were far enough away that it felt like we had the whole place to ourselves.

It was a peaceful place to settle in for the evening and a perfect base for exploring Capitol Reef the next day.
