Atlas Ad Astra Missile Silo

1 / 1
After leaving Colorado Springs, we headed toward Wilson, Kansas for a unique stop. The plan was to camp on the grounds of a Cold War missile silo and tour it the next morning.
Earlier in the trip, we visited the Titan Missile Museum in Arizona, a fully restored site operated by a well-funded nonprofit and a popular tourist attraction. This was something entirely different. This was an abandoned missile silo that became one man’s vision.

We arrived that evening, set up camp, and were treated to a classic Kansas sunset stretched across the open plains. Later that night, Matthew, the owner of the site, hosted a campfire gathering for the guests. He clearly puts in the effort to make everyone feel welcome.

The next morning, we toured the silo with Matthew and Dozer, the missile silo dog, who takes his job as site ambassador very seriously. What Matthew is taking on out here is massive. This is not a finished attraction. It is an active restoration of a decommissioned missile site, driven by one person determined to bring it back to life. You see it throughout the tour. Equipment is out, systems are being rebuilt, and spaces are in transition between what they were and what they will become.

The scale of the structure is impressive on its own, but what stands out more is the effort behind it. This is not backed by an organization. It is one person putting in the work, step by step, to restore something most people would never dare to attempt.

That is what makes this place worth visiting.

You are not just seeing history. You are watching it being rebuilt.

If you are anywhere near Wilson, Kansas, this is absolutely worth the stop. It is unique, ambitious, and one of the more memorable experiences of the trip. If you want the full experience, you can stay in the missile silo itself. Not many places let you spend the night in a piece of Cold War history.
