Why This Stop Matters

Paynes Prairie felt like the first real reminder that this trip was going to keep surprising us. One minute we were easing out of a quiet river campground, and the next we were standing above a huge Florida grassland scanning for bison and wild horses. It was wide, windy, and completely unlike the version of Florida we had expected.

Best for

Wide-open prairie views, easy wildlife spotting, and a bike-friendly trail with real payoff.

Trip vibe

Open sky, tall grass, long sightlines, and the feeling that something wild could show up at any moment.

What surprised us

How big the landscape felt, and how quickly the day shifted from quiet river morning to bison, horses, and alligators.

Paynes Prairie Preserve State Park

The park itself was the shock of the day. Instead of dense Florida woods, it opened up into a broad prairie that felt more western than southern, with enough space that the wildlife looked small against the horizon.
