We left Spokane and made our way toward the North Cascades, with a planned overnight stop at Pearrygin Lake State Park outside Winthrop. The drive turned out to be more rural than I expected, with apple orchards and broad golden grain fields stretching for miles. In lieu of actual mountains, we got a mountain of apple bins at one orchard. It was not dramatic scenery, but it had its own quiet beauty.
Later, the landscape shifted as we passed Chief Joseph Dam and Rufus Woods Lake, which broke up the orchards and farmland with steep dry hills and deep blue water.
Just before arriving at our campground, we passed through the quaint town of Winthrop. With its Old West style storefronts, the small mountain town felt like part of cowboy set.
Later that afternoon, we spent a little time at a picnic table by Pearrygin Lake, enjoying the calm water and the dry hills around it. It was a peaceful place to land for the night and a nice, easy transition into the next leg of the trip.
