Before we left the San Luis Valley, we made one last stop at the UFO Watchtower just north of Great Sand Dunes. It was closed, but we dropped $5 in the donation box and walked around anyway. The property is filled with alien figures, old license plates, small trinkets, and all kinds of unexpected items scattered across the ground.
A half-bald mannequin head hovered above a cluster of rocks and scattered objects. It wore sunglasses, mismatched hoop earrings, and an antennae headband, with a bike helmet dangling behind it. Any visiting alien who stumbles upon this place should not overanalyze. There is no deeper meaning. Humans are just strange.
We climbed up the watchtower and looked out over the valley. No UFOs today. Just wide open land and snow-capped mountains in the distance. After that, we scratched our heads one last time and headed toward our next destination, Cañon City.
Near the Arkansas River, the terrain changed. U.S. Highway 50 follows the river through a canyon with steep rock walls and tight curves. Sand to river to canyon in just a few hours.
We checked into Royal Gorge RV Resort & Cabins, just a few minutes from the bridge. Full hookups. Simple. Convenient. It worked well for what we needed.
