Launch day finally arrived. After a decade of talking about it and six months of real planning, we were ready to pull away from home and set out on a multi-month journey across the country. National parks were the priority, with plenty of stops in between.
Out west was the real destination, but we pointed the rig south first for a quick detour to Orlando for a concert. The road didn’t offer a gentle send-off. Strong winds followed us toward Florida, pushing against the camper like a sail and turning the drive into a test of patience and nerves. Danny kept it planted in the right lane at 60 mph, white-knuckling the wheel as 18-wheelers thundered past. Each one gave us a brief pocket of calm before the wind slammed back into us again.
We had kayaks strapped to the roof of the Tahoe, and I spent most of the day watching them in the rearview mirror, half-convinced they were about to take off. Our first overnight stop was O’Leno State Park. Google said the drive should take six hours. It took nine.
It wasn’t the smooth beginning, and we couldn’t help but wonder what other challenges lay ahead. The trip was officially underway.
