As we left New Mexico, curiosity lured us off the Arizona highway and into a twisted sci-fi fever dream. At The Thing roadside attraction in Arizona, everything is one giant, glorious “What If?” What if aliens arrived millions of years ago? What if they enslaved dinosaurs, until the dinos rebelled—and the Mylzerath (bad aliens) responded by launching an asteroid at Earth? What if the Ammatria (good aliens) tried to stop them?
What if all of humanity’s wars have just been proxy battles in their ancient intergalactic feud? And what if the Nazis—at the command of the Mylzerath—stole a mind control artifact buried in the Arizona desert to take over the world…only to be foiled when the Allies won?
And then, at the end of it all…The Thing was discovered.
Is it the artifact?
What if it is?
We’ll never know.
Or what if this wild and crazy museum was created so people would stop by and walk through the enormous gift shop and buy stuff?!? What if the ploy was effective and now we have tasty chocolate covered almonds to enjoy?
Our first campground stop in Arizona was Kartchner Caverns State Park for two nights. On approach we saw numerous dust devils swirling across the desert, looking like mini tornados. Shortly after, clouds rolled in, and the temperature dropped by 20 degrees. We pulled into the campground under unseasonably chilly and rainy conditions.
